Season one of Revival becomes available on the streaming service August 24, bringing its unusual version of resurrection horror to a wider audience.
Based on the comic series created by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, Revival takes place in a small Wisconsin community where something impossible happens.
People who died during the previous two weeks suddenly return.
They remember who they are.
They recognize their families.
They appear, at least initially, to remain themselves.
That distinction separates the story from traditional zombie horror. The people who return—known as Revivers—are not mindless corpses overrunning the town. Their return instead creates a mystery involving families, law enforcement, religion, science and the fear generated when death suddenly stops behaving according to the rules everyone understands.
At the center of the story is deputy Dana Cypress.
Dana is tasked with investigating the increasingly strange circumstances surrounding the returned dead while simultaneously protecting her sister, Martha, who is herself one of the Revivers.
That personal connection turns the mystery into something more complicated than determining why the dead have returned.
The living must also decide what to do with them.
