Netflix is preparing to turn one of modern crime fiction’s most unsettling villains into a new screen nightmare. The Whisper Man, an adaptation of Alex North’s bestselling novel, is scheduled to arrive on the streaming service August 28.
The story begins with a child’s disappearance. Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer, discovers that his eight-year-old son has been abducted. Desperate for help, Tom reaches out to his estranged father, Peter Willis, a retired police detective. The case quickly begins to echo Peter’s past investigation of a convicted serial killer known as the Whisper Man, raising the possibility that an old terror has found a new way to reach another family.
Robert De Niro plays Peter, while Adam Scott portrays Tom. Michelle Monaghan joins them as Amanda Beck. The cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto and Will Brill.
James Ashcroft directs the film after helming Coming Home in the Dark and The Rule of Jenny Pen. The screenplay comes from Ben Jacoby, whose credits include The First Omen, and Chase Palmer, a co-writer of It. Netflix describes the production as its sixth film partnership with AGBO, the company founded by Anthony and Joe Russo.
The adaptation’s central menace is built around a frighteningly intimate idea: a predator who reaches children through secrets and whispers before anyone else realizes that danger is near. Netflix’s official preview imagery includes a moment inspired by the book in which a hand reaches through a mail slot toward a child. Author Alex North told Netflix’s Tudum that he was pleased to see the disturbing scene make the transition to film.
That combination of family fracture, abduction mystery and lingering serial-killer mythology places The Whisper Man at the border of crime thriller and psychological horror. It also gives the film an unusually strong cast for a late-summer genre release. De Niro’s retired detective is positioned not only as an investigator, but also as a father whose damaged relationship with his adult son becomes part of the crisis.
For readers who already know North’s novel, the August release offers a first chance to see its eerie playground legend and troubled father-son story translated to the screen. Newcomers can expect a dark missing-child investigation in which the past refuses to stay safely locked away.
